Singapore, 7th July 2017 – The first day of the 70th Singapore Open Amateur Championship kicked off bright and early at the Singapore Island Country Club, New Course. Leading the international field of 118 players is Thailand’s Kammalas Namuangruk who finished his first day with a 68 4-under, chalking up 7 birdies. Back to defend his title, Namuangruk won last year’s SOAC by one stroke to his compatriot.
Following closely is our local starboy, Gregory Foo carding a 3-under 69 today with 4 birdies. A solid start to this 4-day tournament, Foo is very happy with his performance for the day.

“I’m pleased that I shot 3-under today – got off to a decent start and had a solid round, especially the back-nine.
Despite the rain delay today the course conditions were good and the greens were rolling well. There were some quick putts but overall it was good. Going in tomorrow, I’ll keep the same mindset and continue to do the same thing today.” said Foo.
Tied third are Ervin Chang (Malaysia), Marc Ong (Singapore) and Kosuke Hamamoto (Thailand) at 71, 2 strokes behind Foo.
As for the International Team event, Team Thailand (Kammalas Namuangruk and Kosuke Hamamoto) take the first place with a total of 139 (68, 71) while Team Singapore (Gregory Foo and Joshua Shou) is in the chase with a total of 142 (69, 73).
A total of 11 countries sent their highly rated players to compete this week.
