Seven Singapore Golfers comprising four men and three women donned the national colours over the past week at the Heron Lake Golf Course, personifying the true meaning of resilience and grit in Vietnam.

After three rounds of fierce competition of Individual Strokeplay, Singapore’s Aloysa Atienza clinched the Silver Medal for the nation in the Women’s event. Carding a momentous seven-under-par (65) in the 54-hole tournament, Aloysa recorded five birdies on her homeward nine to complete her bogey-free round. Hailey Loh finished in the top ten of the women’s leaderboard, coming in 6th.
Leading up to the SEA Games, Aloysa had a remarkable top ten finish in the Australia Women Amateur and emerged as Champion for the female division for the National Ranking Game (NRG) this year. “Walking down the last 9 holes really felt like my final rounds in the Australian Amateur because of the strong wind. So I think all those training camps and competitions we had in Australia really paid off today,” expressed the twenty-three year old SEA Games debutante.

In the men’s individual event, Singapore saw Hiroshi Tai and Ryan Ang both finishing in the top ten positions. Hiroshi Tai finished 9th, while Ryan was in 8th position. Fellow Singaporeans Brandon Han and Wong Qi Wen finished in 22nd and 27th position respectively.
Resilience was similarly exemplified by our golfers in both the men’s and women’s team events. With teammate Inez Ng unfortunately contracting COVID shortly before the Matchplay event, Hailey Loh and Aloysa Atienza rose to the challenge and claimed victory in the Women’s Quarter Finals against Myanmar, with Hailey Loh winning 1 up and Aloysa Atienza winning 4 and 2. In the Semi-Finals, Singapore lost to Malaysia despite a valiant display of Golf, with Malaysia’s Jeneath Wong winning 1 up against Hailey Loh and Mirabel Ting winning 5 & 4 against Aloysa Atienza.
Similar to the women’s team, our men won the Quarter Finals against Vietnam with Brandon Han winning 3 & 2, and Ryan Ang winning 1 up. The team put up a brave performance in the Semi-Finals, but ended up with a 0 -3 loss against Thailand.
In the final Bronze medal matches, Singapore narrowly lost to Indonesia in the men’s division with a 1 – 2 score. In the women’s division, Singapore was tied with Philippines with a 1 -1 score after regulation play. On the fourth playoff hole, Rianne Mikhaela Malixi Aala of the Philippines chipped-in first for birdie, whilst the birdie chip of Singapore’s Hailey Loh just slid by, securing the Women’s Team Bronze for the Philippines.
An impeccable representation of unwavering grit and the epitome of strength, our players played their hearts out throughout the entire week. As we conclude this SEA Games campaign, we would like to thank everyone for the well wishes and overwhelming support shown to our Team Singapore golfers.
The national flag will continue to fly high, as Singapore golf embarks on the next chapter of this exciting journey.
